Post Harvest Handling of cut flowers and cut leaves
Post harvest handling of all floriculture products plays a vital role in maintanance of quality of products and their shelf life. Some of our research highlights in this area;
A dipping solution of 8% Clorox was best to increase vase life of Gerbera cut-flower varieties ‘Dana Allen’ and ‘Quote’.
Leaves of Chlorophytum amaniense treated with a combination of 1% sucrose and 25mg/l KmnO4 retained quality and freshness for 12 days in a vase.
A combined treatment with 25mg/l citric acid and 25mg/l Tween-20 extended the vase life of Calathea louisae leaves to 14 days.
Treatment of Lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera) with 450 ppm Al2(S04) at 200c was best to increase vase life to 09 days from date of harvest.
